National Health Education Standards and Global Education
The current National Health Standards do not incorporate principles of global education. I have made modifications to the National Health Education Standards to incorporate global education concepts, specifically derived from the Global Competence Matrix designed by the Asia Society.
· Students investigate the world beyond their immediate environment.
· Students recognize their own and others’ perspectives.
· Students communicate their ideas effectively with diverse audiences.
· Students translate their ideas and findings into appropriate actions to improve condition
National Health Education Standards
Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.
Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.
Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.
Standard 6: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.
Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.
Standard 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
GLOBALIZED NATIONAL HEALTH EDUCATION STANDARDS
Standard 2: Students will analyze and investigate the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, global perspectives, and other factors on health behaviors.
Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid local, national and global information about products and services to enhance their individual, community and global health.
Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce risks for themselves and their local and global community.
Standard 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, community and global health.
EXAMPLE OF GLOBALIZED HEALTH UNIT - This unit on Infectious Disease around the World incorporates Globalize National Health Education standards.
POSSIBLE INFORMAL OUTCOME ASSESSMENT
-Check for understanding with students how their personal health is impacted by global health issues
-Flash questions about how students can access information about local and global health issues, challenging them to think about how they are related
FORMAL ASSESSMENT OPTIONS
- Students write a brief paper about their understanding of how global health issues are connected to them and their fellow students around the world
-Students interview each other about their understanding of global health issues then compare their understanding with each other and the class.
